Sump Pump Services

Installation, repair and servicing of sump pumps in basements, carparks, lift pits and plant rooms.

Sump Pump Services

Overview

A sump pump removes water that collects in a low point of a building — a basement sump, carpark drainage pit, lift pit or plant room. It is one of the few items of plant where failure is discovered only when water has already begun to rise.

SPS Jetting installs, repairs and services sump pumps, together with the sump pit itself. Silt, sand and debris settling in the pit are a frequent cause of failure, so cleaning the pit is as much a part of reliable operation as maintaining the pump.

We handle single-pump and duty/standby installations, float switch and control panel faults, non-return valve replacement, alarm testing and emergency attendance where flooding is imminent.

Sump Pump Services — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about sump pump services in Singapore, answered by our plumbing and drainage specialists.

What does a sump pump do?

A sump pump removes water that collects in a sump pit at the lowest point of a building and discharges it to the drainage system. It protects basements, carparks, lift pits and plant rooms from flooding caused by groundwater seepage, rainwater ingress, wash-down water or condensate.

Because the pump only operates when water reaches a set level, faults can go unnoticed for long periods. Regular testing is the only reliable way to confirm that the pump will start when it is actually needed.

Why does my sump pump keep running or fail to stop?

Continuous running is most often caused by a float switch that is stuck, obstructed or incorrectly set, or by a failed non-return valve that allows discharged water to flow back into the pit.

It can also indicate that the pump is undersized for the volume of water entering the sump, or that the discharge line is partially blocked. Continuous running overheats the motor and shortens pump life significantly, so it should be investigated promptly.

How often should a sump pit be cleaned?

For most buildings, an annual clean is a sensible baseline. Pits that collect silt, sand or grease — such as those in carparks, loading bays and industrial areas — often require cleaning every three to six months.

Accumulated debris restricts the working volume of the pit, obstructs float switches and is drawn into the impeller, which is a leading cause of premature pump failure. Cleaning the pit is usually far less costly than replacing the pump.

Should a basement have a standby sump pump?

Where flooding would cause significant damage or disruption — basements housing electrical switch rooms, lifts, car parks or stored goods — a duty and standby arrangement is strongly advisable.

The two pumps should alternate so that wear is shared, and a high-level alarm should be fitted to give warning if water rises above the normal operating range. Without an alarm, a failed pump is typically discovered only once water has reached floor level.

Can you attend a flooded basement urgently?

Yes. We respond to sump pump failures and basement flooding 24 hours a day, including extraction of accumulated water, clearing of blocked discharge lines and temporary pumping arrangements.

Once the immediate situation is under control, we identify the underlying cause — pump failure, blocked pit, failed float or an overwhelmed discharge line — so the problem is resolved rather than repeated.
