uPVC Pipe Replacement

Replacement of damaged or ageing uPVC drainage and sanitary pipework, from single runs to complete stacks.

uPVC Pipe Replacement

Overview

uPVC is the most widely used drainage pipe material in Singapore. It is light, corrosion resistant and economical, and it suits the majority of waste and drainage applications in residential and commercial buildings.

It does, however, become brittle with age and prolonged heat exposure, and it is vulnerable to impact damage, poorly made solvent joints and movement caused by inadequate bracketing. Cracked pipes and failed joints are the faults we see most often.

SPS Jetting replaces uPVC pipework ranging from short damaged sections to complete stacks and horizontal runs, including new brackets and supports, correctly made joints, testing and reinstatement of any openings formed for access.

uPVC Pipe Replacement — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about upvc pipe replacement in Singapore, answered by our plumbing and drainage specialists.

How long does uPVC drainage pipe last?

In normal drainage service, uPVC pipework commonly lasts several decades. Its practical life is usually determined by installation quality and exposure rather than by the material itself.

Pipes exposed to direct sunlight, to repeated discharge of very hot water, or to movement caused by insufficient bracketing will fail considerably earlier. Cracking at joints and along the pipe barrel is the usual failure mode.

Can a cracked uPVC pipe be repaired instead of replaced?

A short, accessible crack can sometimes be repaired with a proprietary coupling or by cutting out and replacing a section. This is often the practical solution for an isolated defect.

Where cracking is widespread, where the pipe has become brittle with age, or where the same run has already been repaired several times, replacing the section or stack is more economical than repeated localised repairs.

What causes uPVC pipes to crack or leak at the joints?
  • Solvent joints made with insufficient cement or without proper preparation.
  • Inadequate bracketing allowing movement and stress at joints.
  • No allowance for thermal expansion on long runs.
  • Repeated discharge of very hot water or steam.
  • Impact damage during other building works.
  • Ageing and embrittlement of pipe exposed to sunlight.

Joint failures are more common than failures of the pipe itself, which is why replacement work should always include correctly formed joints and properly spaced supports.

Is uPVC suitable for replacing a cast iron stack?

It can be, but the decision should take account of acoustic and fire requirements. uPVC transmits considerably more noise than cast iron, which can be noticeable where a stack passes through bedrooms or quiet occupied spaces.

Where a stack passes through fire compartments, appropriate fire stopping or collars must be provided. In buildings where noise or fire performance is a priority, cast iron often remains the better choice.

How long does a uPVC pipe replacement take?

Replacing an accessible damaged section is typically a half-day to one-day job. A full stack replacement in an occupied building usually takes several days, as work proceeds floor by floor and access to each unit must be coordinated.

Concealed pipework requiring hacking and reinstatement takes longer, since making good and any tiling must be completed after the pipework has been tested.
